The documentary “Soil of Spain” (1937) was made by the efforts of a group of people of different nationalities. The financial sponsor of the Hollywood film, the director Joris Ivens and the narration of the film was narrated by the voice of Ernest Hemingway. The film took an artistic approach to the issue of telling the truth in political matters, and incidentally showcased Ivens growing multifaceted aesthetic skills. With an approach that is very similar to the romantic realism of Robert Flaherty, this film takes the viewer to watch the daily life of a village near Madrid. This documentary, which was filmed during the war, showed the stages of the construction of the water supply canal, which played an essential role in irrigating the crops that were to be cultivated to feed Madrid. The focus of the film is on the daily life of the village, and at the same time it invites the viewer to watch the activities and habits of the villagers. In the film, we see that war has now become a part of the life of the village people, and we see the villagers guarding the village with guns and the destruction caused by the shelling. looks for. The unwavering support of the villagers to the anti-Franco movement is woven into the fabric of their values and daily life. With the help of Hemingway’s short narration, Ivens managed to carefully avoid the troublesome issues of multi-party conflicts. Instead of presenting political information, the film conveys human intimacy. Ivens uses the realism approach to bring out the viewer’s feelings. Although this film was released for a short period of time, it collected many donations in support of the anti-Franco republican movement in theaters and film clubs, as well as in private screenings. The Spanish soil documentary was also a response to a debate that existed among filmmakers at the time: should a filmmaker make a warmonger film in order to gain new allies for the common war effort, or should he try to appeal to a more distant audience than the right one? A convincing point of view? The second attempt requires a more artistic aspect, which the Spanish soil documentary was successful in this way. After this film, Ivens continued to work as an active progressive filmmaker who cultivated many students until his death in 1989.
